Shmuel Levin - Chazzan
It is a great honour for me to join the Adath Israel Poale Zedek Anshei Ozeroff Congregation, a community with a special and distinguished history; a Synagogue where great Chazzanim davened before me.
I was born in Tel Aviv, where I received my general education. I studied music at the Tel Aviv Conservatory of Music, and trained as a Chazzan at the Tel Aviv Institute for the Cantorial Art. I served for three years in the IDF, where I met Gittit. We were married in November, 1992. We have one daughter, named Shirah Lee.
Between June 1997 to May 2003 I served as Chief Cantor of the Durban United Hebrew Congregation, South Africa, before moving to Germany, to serve as Chief Cantor of the Munich Great Synagogue.
We arrived in Montreal on Summer 2010, and now we are delighted to be part of the ADATH Family.
For me, Chazzanut is a’tool’ used during the Teffila, in order to connect with Hashem. Music has a great power, so let’s use it to get closer to God! My mission is to be a loyal Shaliach Tzibur, Emissary of the People.
In order to perform my duty as a Shaliach Tziburand who serves YOU, dear congregants, I would like to invite you to dialogue with me: Tell me about the music you like, and the tunes you would like to hear at Shul. Tell me which parts of the service are close to your heart. Tell me what you expect your Chazzan to do, in order to help you connect with Hashem.
My personal e-mail address, chazzan@adath.ca , is open and available for all of you. I’ll be happy to hear from all of you.
Please visit my website, www.cantor-levin.com. There you can get to know me and my family better, and you can hear some of the music I’ve done so far. I hope you’ll enjoy!
